First, there was the block. Then there was the dunk. Then there was the 50-point finale.
Giannis Antetokounmpo put on a show in the 2021 NBA Finals. He showed the Greek Freak is an apt nickname and, just being 26 years old, this may just be the beginning.
The six-game run was so impressive it had me wondering whether it was the greatest performance ever in an NBA Finals.
I'm not a fan of "opinion" lists. I like numbers and, fortunately, there is a way to look at this objectively. Basketball-Reference.com calculates a game score using all kinds of criteria, from the normal - points, rebounds, assists, etc. - to the more advanced - effective field goal percentage, offensive and defensive rating.
I went back and looked at the top average game scores of every NBA Finals back to 1977-1978 because Basketball-Reference.com doesn't have enough data to calculate it before that year. Of course, 1976-1977 was the first year of the NBA after the ABA/NBA merger and the top two players of that series were Julius Erving and Bill Walton. I estimated their series score using Erving's 1980 Finals as a comparison, and I compared Walton's results with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 1980 Finals.
What does it take to have a great "game score"? You have to contribute in all categories and do it efficiently. Here are the game scores of three iconic NBA Finals games - Giannis' game six against the Suns, Michael Jordan's game four explosion against the Suns in 1993, and Magic Johnson's game six in his rookie year against the 76ers.
What makes for a great "game score" |
